Introduction - Biennials By and For The World

I am interested in investigating whether Biennials can be a dual site of celebration of cultural specificity and cross-cultural mediation. I am particularly interested in the experimental and innovative nature of curatorial strategies.

Reading List

  • “What do cultural leaders really think about the problems they, and the arts and cultural sector, face?

This book brings global leaders in the cultural field into dialogue with academics and experts to offer profound insight and perspectives on the complex issues the cultural sector faces in a rapidly accelerating and destabilising twenty-first century context.”

  • “In Biennial Boom, Paloma Checa-Gismero traces an archeology of contemporary art biennials to uncover the processes that prompted these exhibitions to become the global art world's defining events at the end of the twentieth century. By outlining how early biennials set the basis for what is now recognized as ‘global contemporary art,’ Checa-Gismero intervenes in previous accounts of the contemporary art world in order to better understand how it became the exclusionary, rarified institution of today.”
